Understanding A Level English

A Level English Literature (CIE 9695 / Edexcel 9ET0)

A Level English Literature is the most widely offered A Level English course at Hong Kong international schools and the one with the longest tradition in UK university admissions. It is a course in literary studies: students read, study and analyse prescribed literary texts — novels, poetry collections and plays — and are assessed on their ability to interpret meaning, analyse authorial technique and construct sustained analytical arguments in essay form, all of which can be improved with our expert tutors.

CIE 9695 English Literature is structured across four components: We provide full coverage of CIE English Literature (Exam Code: 9695) and Edexcel English Literature (Exam Code: YET01).

  • Paper 1 — Poetry and Prose (2 hours 15 minutes, 75 marks): students answer two questions from a choice, one on a set poetry text and one on a set prose text. For each, students choose between a passage-based question (close analysis of a given extract) or an essay question (sustained analytical argument across the whole text). Compulsory for all students. Dedicated Poetry & Prose classes build Textual Analysis skills for both passage-based and whole-text essay questions.
  • Paper 2 — Drama (1 hour 30 minutes, 50 marks): students answer one question on a set drama text — either passage-based or essay. The drama paper expects students to demonstrate awareness of texts as performance, not only as written literature. Our Drama coaching emphasises performance awareness and the role of Context in shaping interpretation.
  • Paper 3 — Poetry (1 hour 15 minutes, 50 marks): an unseen poetry comparison paper. Students are given two unseen poems and must produce a comparative analysis — no set text knowledge required, only the ability to perform close literary analysis on unfamiliar texts under timed conditions. This is the most demanding paper for many students and the one where our tutoring produces the most concentrated improvement.
  • Component 4 — Pre-release Reading (open book, 2 hours, 75 marks): students receive a Reading Passage booklet in advance of the examination and study it in preparation. In the examination, they answer questions that require both a response to the Pre-release Reading and independent creative or critical writing.

Edexcel 9ET0 English Literature covers similar content with a slightly different structure — it includes a coursework component (20% weighting) that allows students to produce an extended literary essay outside examination conditions. This coursework-inclusive structure can be an advantage for students who are stronger analytical writers outside examination pressure than within it. The A Level English tutors here at All Round Education cover both CIE 9695 and Edexcel 9ET0.

A Level English Language (CIE 9093)

A Level English Language is a fundamentally different course from English Literature — it is not primarily a course in literary study but in linguistic analysis. Students examine how language works: how it is structured, how it varies across contexts, how it changes over time, how children acquire it, and how it functions in a range of real-world communicative situations. It is the appropriate choice for students who are analytically curious about language itself — how a political speech constructs authority, how media language creates ideology, how accent and dialect signal identity — rather than about literature.

CIE 9093 A Level English Language is assessed across three components: Our English Language programme provides full coverage of CIE English Language (Exam Code: 9093) and Edexcel English Language (Exam Code: YEN01).

  • Paper 1 — Language Varieties (1 hour 30 minutes, 40 marks): students analyse one or two non-literary texts (newspaper articles, speeches, online texts, transcripts of spoken language) using a linguistic analytical framework — identifying genre conventions, register, discourse structure, grammatical features, lexical choices and pragmatic function. The paper rewards students who can apply linguistic terminology precisely and who understand how specific language choices serve the communicative purpose of a text. Dedicated Language Variety classes build the Linguistic Frameworks students need to apply terminology precisely.
  • Paper 2 — Language Topics (2 hours, 70 marks): students answer questions on three topics: (1) Language acquisition — how children acquire language from birth through to fluency (stages of acquisition, key theorists: Chomsky’s LAD, Vygotsky’s ZPD, Skinner’s behaviourist model, Bruner’s LASS); (2) Language and the self — how language relates to identity, power, gender, region, social group and taboo; (3) Language change — how English has evolved over time (Old, Middle, Early Modern and Modern English; factors driving change: technology, social change, globalisation). Students also produce a piece of directed writing for a specified audience and purpose.
  • Paper 3 — Language Investigation and Creative Writing (3 hours, 100 marks): the most substantial paper. Students write a language investigation (collecting and analysing authentic language data on a research question of their own design within specified parameters) and produce a creative writing piece with a critical commentary reflecting on their own linguistic choices. Our coaching drills Textual Manipulation — recasting and reshaping texts for different audiences and purposes.

The linguistic analytical framework — the ability to identify and discuss phonological, lexical, grammatical, semantic, pragmatic and discourse features of texts — is the foundational skill of A Level English Language. Our English Language tutors are trained in linguistic analysis rather than in literary critical analysis — the two require different vocabularies, different frameworks and different thinking modes.

A Level English Language & Literature (CIE 9093 combined pathway)

CIE 9093 also encompasses an English Language & Literature pathway that combines elements of both language analysis and literary study. This pathway is a good middle ground for students who enjoy both literary engagement with texts and analytical examination of how language functions in context — who find pure Language too linguistically technical and pure Literature too exclusively focused on canonical texts.

The Language & Literature pathway is assessed through the same paper structure as English Language, but the texts analysed include literary texts alongside non-literary ones, and the writing tasks are more likely to include creative and literary responses alongside functional directed writing. The key difference from pure Literature: the analytical framework foregrounds language choices in context (linguistic analysis) as much as literary interpretation — the two lenses are applied together rather than separately.

For students who are deciding between Literature and Language & Literature, the most useful question is: are you more interested in what texts mean (Literature) or in how language constructs meaning in all its forms — literary and non-literary (Language & Literature)? Students who are passionate about novels, poetry and theatre typically find Literature more satisfying; students who are curious about language in advertising, politics, social media, comedy and everyday speech alongside literary texts typically find Language & Literature more engaging.

What Are A Levels?

A Levels, short for Advanced Level, are globally recognised qualifications that high school students typically take in their final two years of study. The A Level programme provides students with a rigorous and in-depth education in a range of subjects, from the humanities and social sciences to the natural sciences and mathematics.

Originally developed in the United Kingdom, A Levels are now taken by students around the world as a pathway to university study or employment opportunities. A Levels are accepted by universities in many countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and, of course, the United Kingdom.

At All Round Education Academy, we offer comprehensive A Level tutoring services to help students achieve their academic goals. Frequently Asked Questions: A Level English Tutoring in Hong Kong

What’s the difference between A Level English Literature and Language?

A Level English Literature (CIE 9695) is a course in literary study — students read, analyse and write essays about prescribed literary texts (novels, plays, poetry). The analytical framework is literary: characterisation, narrative perspective, imagery, theme, genre. A Level English Language (CIE 9093) is a course in linguistic analysis — students examine how language works across a range of authentic contexts (media, conversation, social media, advertising) using a linguistic analytical framework (phonology, lexis, grammar, semantics, pragmatics). English Language also includes specialist topic knowledge: language acquisition (how children learn to speak), language and identity (how language relates to gender, power, regional identity) and language change (how English has evolved over time). The two courses require different analytical vocabularies, different thinking habits and suit different university pathways — Literature for English, Law, History and Humanities degrees; Language for Linguistics, Journalism and Communications.

Should I choose CIE or Edexcel for A Level English?

CIE 9695 English Literature is the most common A Level English board at Hong Kong international schools and the one AllRound most frequently teaches. CIE is a linear qualification — all examinations at the end of Year 13, no coursework. Edexcel 9ET0 English Literature includes a coursework component (20%) that allows students to produce an extended literary essay outside examination conditions — an advantage for students who are stronger writers in non-examination settings. If your school offers both, the choice depends on whether the coursework flexibility is an advantage for your child’s profile. Contact AllRound for advice on which is more appropriate given the student’s specific strengths.

Does A Level English require studying British literature?

CIE 9695 English Literature set texts are predominantly from the British and Irish literary tradition — Shakespeare, Hardy, Heaney, Plath, Keats — alongside some American texts (Miller, Fitzgerald). This does not mean every text is from Britain, but the cultural and historical contexts students are expected to draw on are primarily British and Western. For HK students who have not encountered these contexts through schooling, our A Level English tutors explicitly teach the relevant historical, social and cultural context alongside the texts. Edexcel 9ET0 has a slightly broader set text list that includes more contemporary and global perspectives, which may be an advantage for some students.

How does A Level English compare to IB English A?

A Level English Literature (CIE 9695) and IB English A: Literature are broadly comparable in the depth of literary analysis they require. The key structural differences: A Level studies 3-4 set texts in deep detail across Papers 1 and 2; IB studies 9 (SL) or 13 (HL) works across Papers 1, 2, the IO and the HL Essay, with greater breadth but less depth per text. A Level has no oral component (IB has the Individual Oral, worth 20%); A Level has an unseen poetry comparison paper (Paper 3) with no direct IB equivalent. IB distributes assessment risk across the IO, HL Essay and final papers; A Level concentrates all assessment in final examinations. Both are equally recognised by competitive universities. For students at IB schools, IB is the natural choice; for students at A Level schools, CIE 9695 is the standard.

When should I reach out to an A Level English tutor?

For A Level English Literature, tutoring is most effective when it begins as soon as the set texts are assigned — typically the start of Year 12 (September). Literature close reading and essay technique are skills that develop slowly through sustained practice; they cannot be effectively compressed into the months before examinations. The Paper 3 unseen poetry skill in particular requires repeated practice with unfamiliar texts over 18+ months to develop the reading speed and analytical fluency that the paper demands. For A Level English Language, the linguistic analytical framework needs to be built before it can be applied to past paper texts — beginning at the start of Year 12 allows the full framework to be developed before the first school assessment. Reaching out to an All Round tutor in Year 13 can still produce meaningful grade improvements, particularly in essay structure and time management, but the analytical depth built in Year 12 cannot be fully replaced by intensive short-term preparation.
