Cambridge CIE A Level Biology (9700)

CIE 9700 is a linear A Level qualification — all examinations are sat at the end of the two-year course with no modular retake opportunities. It is the most common A Level Biology board in Hong Kong international schools offering a British-curriculum post-16 programme. The CIE 9700 syllabus is organised into 26 chapters across AS Level (Chapters 1–16) and A Level (Chapters 17–26):
We provide complete coverage of CIE A-level Biology (Exam Code: 9700).

  • Cell structure and function (Ch 1-2): prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, cell membranes (fluid mosaic model), movement across membranes (diffusion, osmosis, active transport, endocytosis/exocytosis) — including detailed Cell Transport Systems coaching
  • Biological molecules (Ch 3-4): carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, water — structure and function; food tests; enzyme kinetics (Michaelis-Menten concepts, inhibition types) — our dedicated Biological Molecules and Enzyme Kinetics drills cover this in depth
  • Cell division, cell diversity and cellular organisation (Ch 5): mitosis, meiosis, stem cells, tissues and organs
  • The cell cycle and cancer (Ch 6): mutations, oncogenes, tumour suppressor genes
  • Transport in plants (Ch 7): xylem (cohesion-tension theory), phloem (pressure-flow hypothesis), transpiration and its regulation
  • Transport in animals (Ch 8): mammalian blood system, cardiac cycle, haemoglobin and oxygen dissociation curves, defence mechanisms
  • Gas exchange (Ch 9): mammalian lung, fish gills, insect gas exchange — surface area, thickness and gradient adaptations
  • Infectious diseases (Ch 10): pathogens, transmission, immune response (B and T lymphocytes, memory cells), vaccination
  • Immunity (Ch 11): antibody structure, monoclonal antibodies, HIV
  • Energy and respiration (Ch 12): glycolysis, Krebs cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, ATP synthesis — molecular detail — our Respiration Mechanisms sessions break down each stage
  • Photosynthesis (Ch 13): light-dependent reactions, Calvin cycle — molecular detail; chloroplast structure — covered in our Photosynthesis Mechanisms module
  • Homeostasis and control (Ch 14-15): blood glucose regulation, osmoregulation, nervous coordination (the synapse), muscle contraction (sarcomere model) — taught through our Nervous & Homeostatic Control programme
  • Genetic information, variation and relationships (Ch 16): DNA structure, gene expression (transcription, RNA processing, translation), genetic code
  • Inherited change (Ch 17-18): Mendelian genetics (extended to non-Mendelian inheritance), population genetics (Hardy-Weinberg), natural selection and evolution — with focused work on Inheritance Metrics and genetic-cross calculations
  • Genetic technology (Ch 19-20): gene cloning (PCR, plasmid vectors), gel electrophoresis, gene editing (CRISPR concepts), GMOs and ethical considerations — our Gene Expression & Technology classes connect these to exam questions
  • Ecology (Ch 21-22): populations, communities, ecosystems, energy flow, nutrient cycles, human impact on ecosystems
  • Infectious diseases and global health (Ch 23-24): global epidemiology, malaria in depth, antibiotic resistance mechanisms, MRSA
  • Controlling and coordinating responses (Ch 25-26): hormones and the endocrine system, plant growth regulators (auxin, gibberellins), photoperiodism

Edexcel International A Level (IAL) Biology

Edexcel IAL Biology is a modular qualification — unlike CIE’s linear structure, IAL allows students to sit individual units at different sessions and retake underperforming units for grade improvement. This flexibility makes IAL particularly attractive for students who want the option to bank strong unit grades or recover from a weak sitting.

IAL Biology is assessed across six units across AS and A2:

  • Unit 1 (WBI01) — Lifestyle, Transport, Genes and Health: cardiovascular disease risk factors, transport in animals and plants, genetics (DNA structure, protein synthesis), genetic disease
  • Unit 2 (WBI02) — Development, Plants and the Environment: mitosis and meiosis, plant responses (phototropism, gravitropism), ecology (populations, succession, energy flow), biodiversity
  • Unit 3 (WBI03) — Practical Skills in Biology I: practical skills assessed across Units 1 and 2 content — planning, data analysis, evaluation
  • Unit 4 (WBI04) — Energy, Environment, Microbiology and Immunity: cellular respiration and photosynthesis (molecular detail), microbiology (bacteria, antibiotics), immunity (B and T cells, vaccination)
  • Unit 5 (WBI05) — Respiration, Internal Environment, Coordination and Gene Technology: homeostasis (blood glucose, body temperature, osmoregulation), nervous coordination, muscle contraction, gene technology (cloning, GMOs, ethics)
  • Unit 6 (WBI06) — Practical Skills in Biology II: practical skills assessed across Units 4 and 5 content — the A2 practical skills paper

IAL sessions run in January, June and October — giving students significantly more scheduling flexibility than CIE’s June-only sitting for most papers. Our tutors who cover IAL align programmes specifically to the student’s intended sitting sessions.

What Are A Levels?

A Levels, short for Advanced Level, are globally recognised qualifications that high school students typically take in their final two years of study. The A Level programme provides students with a rigorous and in-depth education in a range of subjects, from the humanities and social sciences to the natural sciences and mathematics.

Originally developed in the United Kingdom, A Levels are now taken by students around the world as a pathway to university study or employment opportunities. A Levels are accepted by universities in many countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and, of course, the United Kingdom.

At All Round Education Academy, we offer comprehensive A Level tutoring services to help students achieve their academic goals. Whether you’re looking to improve your grades, prepare for university, or simply gain a deeper understanding of your subjects, our experienced tutors can provide you with the personalised support you need to succeed.

Frequently Asked Questions: A Level Biology Tutoring in Hong Kong

Is A Level Biology required for medicine?

For most UK and Hong Kong medical schools, Chemistry A Level is the mandatory science requirement — but Biology is strongly recommended by almost all institutions and formally required by some. At Oxford Medicine, most colleges list Biology as expected alongside Chemistry. At Cambridge Medicine (via NatSci Biological route), Biology HL is strongly expected. At HKU MBBS, both Biology and Chemistry are required. At UCL, Imperial, and King’s, Chemistry is mandatory, and Biology is strongly recommended but technically optional for very strong candidates with exceptional UCAT scores. AllRound’s advice to all medicine applicants: take both Biology and Chemistry if at all possible. The content overlap between the two subjects at A Level makes studying both more efficient than studying either alone, and our tutors believe that taking only Chemistry for medicine creates unnecessary admissions risk.

What is the difference between CIE and Edexcel A Level Biology?

Cambridge CIE A Level Biology (9700) is a linear qualification — all examinations are sat at the end of the two-year course, with no modular retake option. It is assessed across four papers: MCQ (Paper 1), AS structured (Paper 2), A Level structured (Paper 4) and Practical skills (Paper 5). Edexcel International A Level (IAL) Biology is a modular qualification — six units sat across multiple sessions (January, June and October), with individual units retakeable for grade improvement. IAL is assessed across Units 1-6, with dedicated practical skills units (Unit 3 for AS, Unit 6 for A2). Content coverage is broadly similar across both boards. The main practical difference: CIE is final-exam-only; IAL offers the safety net of modular retakes, making it particularly attractive for students who want scheduling flexibility or who have already underperformed in one unit.

What is the difference between AS and A2 Biology?

AS Level Biology (Year 12, or the first half of A Level) covers the foundational biological concepts: cell biology, biological molecules, transport, disease and immunity, gas exchange, and genetics at the introductory level. For CIE 9700, this is Chapters 1-16. Our A Level tutors have noted that A2 Level Biology (Year 13, or the second half) covers the more advanced and mathematically demanding content: genetics at molecular depth (gene expression, gene technology), ecology (population genetics, diversity indices, energy flow calculations), respiration and photosynthesis at biochemical depth, homeostasis and coordination, and the CIE-specific synoptic essay requirement in Paper 4. A2 content contributes a higher proportion of the final A Level grade than AS content — for CIE 9700, Paper 4 (A Level questions, including A2 content) is worth 100 marks versus Paper 2 (AS questions) worth 60 marks.

How does A Level Biology compare to IB Biology HL?

A Level Biology (CIE 9700 or Edexcel IAL) and IB Biology HL cover broadly similar content at broadly similar depth — both require detailed mechanistic knowledge of cellular processes, both include genetics at the molecular level, and both have a substantial ecology component with statistical elements. The structural differences, as noted by our tutors, are that A Level concentrates all assessment risk in end-of-course examinations (no ongoing Internal Assessment); IB Biology HL distributes assessment across the Internal Assessment (20% of grade), the four option topic papers, and the final examinations. The IB’s Paper 3 option topics (Neurobiology, Biotechnology, Ecology, Human Physiology) are specialist content without a direct A Level equivalent. A Level Biology’s Paper 5 (practical skills assessment) tests similar skills to the IB Biology IA at a lower depth of investigation. Both qualifications are equally well recognised by competitive universities. For students at IB schools, IB Biology HL is the natural choice; for students at British-curriculum A Level schools, CIE 9700 or Edexcel IAL is the standard.

When should we seek out a tutor for A Level Biology?

We recommend beginning structured A Level Biology tutoring at the start of Year 12. Biology is one of the subjects where the compounding effect of conceptual gaps is most acute — a student who does not develop a mechanistic understanding of DNA replication in Term 1 will find gene expression in Term 2 more difficult, and gene technology in Year 13 harder still, because each topic builds on the molecular framework established by the previous one. For medicine applicants, beginning at the start of Year 12 is particularly important: the UCAT is typically sat in the summer before Year 13, which means the Year 12 study period is when both A Level Biology understanding and UCAT-relevant analytical skills need to be developed simultaneously. Seeking out a tutor in Year 13 can still produce meaningful improvements, particularly in Paper 5 practical skills and synoptic essay technique, but the foundational mechanistic understanding built in Year 12 cannot be fully replaced by intensive revision in the months before examinations.
