What is the IB PYP, and who is it for?
The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a curriculum framework for students aged 3 to 12 (typically Reception to Year 6 or Grade K–6). It is the first stage of the IB continuum — preceding the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP). The PYP focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both inside and outside the classroom. It uses a transdisciplinary approach where students explore six themes of global significance. In Hong Kong, the PYP is offered at numerous international schools, including ESF schools (Peak School, Glenealy, Clearwater Bay School, Bradbury), CDNIS, and others.
What subjects are covered in the PYP?
The PYP covers six subject areas: Language (English, French, Mandarin, Spanish), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Arts, and Personal, Social and Physical Education (PSPE). Rather than teaching subjects in isolation, the PYP connects them through Units of Inquiry — transdisciplinary themes that encourage students to make connections across disciplines and develop a global perspective. All Round Education Academy provides specialist tutoring in English, Mathematics, Science, Mandarin, French, and Spanish for PYP students.
How is the PYP assessed?
PYP assessment is ongoing and formative. Teachers use a variety of strategies including observations, performance assessments, portfolios, and student self-assessments. There are no formal external examinations in the PYP. Instead, student progress is measured against learning outcomes and the Learner Profile attributes. In Year 6 (the final year of PYP), students complete the PYP Exhibition — a collaborative, transdisciplinary inquiry project that demonstrates their ability to apply skills and knowledge to a real-world issue. This is the most significant assessment in the PYP.
When should my child start PYP tutoring?
The ideal time depends on the child’s needs. For building strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, starting in Year 1–2 allows habits to form early. For PYP Exhibition preparation, Year 5 or early Year 6 is the key window — ideally before the topic is finalised. For transition support (moving from PYP to MYP), the summer between Year 6 and Year 7 is the prime time. Students who are finding specific subjects challenging or who need confidence-building can benefit from tutoring at any stage of the PYP.
