How We Support Different A Level Exam Boards
One of the most important — and most under-explained — aspects of A-Level tutoring is exam board alignment. The four major A-Level boards (Cambridge CIE, Edexcel, AQA and OCR) differ meaningfully in assessment structure, paper format, mark-scheme logic and the depth of content tested in each unit.
At All Round Education Academy, our A Level tutor Hong Kong team teaches across all major exam boards. We adjust each lesson to fit the syllabus, paper format, and exam style of your chosen board, so you’re always studying what matters most.
We provide Edexcel International A Level (IAL) tutors HK (Edexcel IAL tuition), a dedicated Cambridge International A Level tutor Hong Kong service (CIE A Level tuition), specialist AQA A Level tuition HK, and an OCR Physics A Level tutor for science-heavy pathways. Sessions cover both Modular A Level unit revision and Linear A Level exam prep formats depending on the syllabus your school follows.
Edexcel (Pearson Edexcel)
Edexcel A Levels follow a modular structure and enable students to sit papers across multiple exam sessions. Subjects like Maths, Chemistry, or Politics are broken down into defined units, making the content more manageable. This format also provides flexibility for resitting, which many international school students appreciate.
Course codes include: 9MA0 (Maths), 9CH0 (Chemistry), 9CN0 (Chinese), etc.
Cambridge International (CIE)
Cambridge International A-Level (CIE) is the most widely offered A-Level board at Hong Kong international schools with a British curriculum. It is also the most common A-Level board used by students studying independently outside school. Cambridge CIE operates on a linear model: all exams are taken at the end of the two-year course, with no modular re-sit opportunities.
Course codes include: 9709 (Mathematics), 9701 (Chemistry), 9715 (Chinese Language & Literature), etc.
AQA / OCR
These UK boards are widely used by schools following the British curriculum. AQA and OCR often include essay-based assessments, data-response tasks, and strong practical components in science subjects. Many questions require multi-step reasoning and clear written justifications.
Course codes include: 7402 (AQA Biology), H556 (OCR Physics A), etc.
Edexcel International A Levels (IAL)
The Edexcel International A-Level (IAL) is Pearson’s A-Level offering for international students. Unlike Cambridge CIE (linear only), IAL operates on a modular structure: AS-Level units and A2 units are assessed separately, and individual units can be retaken to improve grades. This flexibility makes IAL particularly attractive for students who want the option to bank strong AS grades or retake underperforming units.
Course codes include: WBI11 (Biology), WMA11 (Mathematics), etc.
Our A Level tutors in Hong Kong make sure every lesson is tailored to your specific board, from paper structure and pacing to question types and examiner expectations. Whether you’re revising for Pure Maths or preparing a source-based History essay, we align our teaching to help you maximise your performance.

What Are A Levels?
A Levels, short for Advanced Level, are globally recognised qualifications that high school students typically take in their final two years of study. The A Level programme provides students with a rigorous and in-depth education in a range of subjects, from the humanities and social sciences to the natural sciences and mathematics.
Originally developed in the United Kingdom, A Levels are now taken by students around the world as a pathway to university study or employment opportunities. A Levels are accepted by universities in many countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and, of course, the United Kingdom.
At All Round Education Academy, we offer comprehensive A Level tutoring services to help students achieve their academic goals. Whether you’re looking to improve your grades, prepare for university, or simply gain a deeper understanding of your subjects, our experienced tutors can provide you with the personalised support you need to succeed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About A Level Tutors in Hong Kong
What’s the difference between Edexcel and Cambridge A-Levels in HK?
Cambridge CIE A-Level is a linear/staggered qualification: while you can resit specific papers it is likely that you would need to sit all the papers within a specific exam series. Edexcel International A-Level (IAL) is a modular qualification: AS-Level units and A2 units are assessed separately across multiple sessions (January and June), and individual units can be retaken for grade improvement. IAL also allows students to bank strong AS results and use them toward a full A-Level. For students who want flexibility in their exam timeline — or who are studying outside a school context — IAL’s modularity is a significant practical advantage. The tutors here at All Round Education are capable of teaching these qualifications.
Do Hong Kong universities accept A-Level qualifications?
Yes. HKU, HKUST and CUHK all accept A-Level results as a pathway to undergraduate admission. Requirements vary by faculty and change from year to year. As a general guide, HKU Medicine typically requires 4 A* grades, including Biology and Chemistry; HKUST Engineering typically requires 1 A* and 2 A grades, including Mathematics and Physics; CUHK competitive programmes typically require three A grades. At All Round Education our consultants can advise on the application process and subject selection for specific university targets.
How difficult are A-Levels compared to HKDSE or IB?
A-Levels, HKDSE and the IB Diploma are each demanding in different ways, and direct difficulty comparisons are misleading. A-Level concentrates depth: students study three or four subjects at a high level, with all assessment risk concentrated in end-of-course examinations. HKDSE covers more subjects at varying levels and includes a local curriculum context. The IB Diploma spreads workload across six subjects plus the Core (TOK, EE, CAS) — the breadth is greater, but depth per subject can be less than A-Level on average. For a student who knows their degree subject and wants to specialise, A-Level is considered to be a suitable pathway. For a student who values breadth or is undecided, IB is often the better fit.
When are A-Level exams taken?
Different examination boards offer varying schedules for A-Level exams. Edexcel International A-Level (IAL) provides the most flexibility, with exam sessions in January, June, and October for both AS and A2 units. Cambridge CIE A-Level’s primary examination period for most Year 13 students is May–June, though an October–November session is available, mainly for resits or for students taking accelerated programs in certain subjects. All Round Education ensures that each student’s tutoring program is precisely matched to the specific, annually published exam timetable of their chosen board.
How many A-Levels should I take?
The standard for UK university applications is three A-Levels. Four A-Levels can strengthen an application to Oxbridge or highly selective UK programmes — particularly in Mathematics and Sciences, where a fourth subject (such as Further Mathematics or an additional Science) demonstrates academic breadth. However, four full A-Levels represent a significant workload, and a strong set of three A*–A grades is always preferable to four mixed grades. All Round Education tutors can advise on the right number of subjects based on your child’s university targets and current grade trajectory.
A-Level vs. IB — Which is more suitable for Hong Kong students?
The “best” curriculum depends entirely on your child’s academic strengths, preferred learning style, and university goals. In Hong Kong, students typically choose between these pathways:
CIE A-Level: Best for students who want to specialize deeply in 3 or 4 subjects. It is a linear qualification.
International A-Level (IAL): Highly popular in Hong Kong due to its modular structure. Unlike the linear CIE A-Level, IAL allows students to sit for exams in stages (January, June, and October) and retake specific units to improve their overall grade. This flexibility is a significant advantage for students who prefer “banking” strong results as they go.
IB Diploma (IBDP): Ideal for all-rounders who thrive on breadth. It requires six subjects plus the “Core” elements (TOK, EE, and CAS). It is often considered more demanding in terms of consistent workload and coursework (IAs) compared to the exam-heavy A-Level route.
