For Hong Kong students, Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics is a key steppingstone towards A levels and IB and other university preparation courses. Whether you’re taking the Foundation (often called Standard) tier or the Higher tier, a clear strategy and smart practice will help you score well. This guide focuses on the Edexcel IGCSE Math (Specification A, code 4MA1) and gives practical, syllabus-aligned tips for success in 2026.

  1. Know Your Tier and Syllabus Structure

Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics has two main routes:

Foundation Tier:

(Standard) targets grades 1–5 (old D–C) and is suitable if you’re aiming for a solid pass (grade 4–5) and will continue with math at GCSE/ALevel/IB at a standard level.

Higher Tier:

Targets grades 4–9 (old C–A\*) and includes more advanced topics; it’s the right choice for students aiming for top grades and planning to study ALevel/IB HL maths.

Both tiers are assessed by two written papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2), each worth 50% of the total grade. Foundation papers are 1 hour 30 minutes each; higher papers are 2 hours each.

  1. Understand the 2026 Assessment Model

 -The 2026 Edexcel IGCSE Maths (Specification A) is a linear qualification, meaning all assessment is at the end of the course via the two papers.

 – Calculator allowed in both paper (unlike some older specs where one paper was noncalculator). 

– Your calculator must be a standard scientific or graphic display calculator (GDC), but symbolic algebra calculators (like some CAS models) are not permitted.

– Questions are a mix of multiplechoice, shortanswer, and structured problems; many questions are set in reallife contexts.

 

  1. Foundation (Standard) Tier: Aim for a Grade 4–5

If you’re on the Foundation tier, focus on mastering the core skills and avoiding careless slips.

  1. a) Focus on Core Number & Algebra Skills

Foundation students need strong fluency in:

– Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, and proportion 

– Basic algebra: simplifying expressions, solving linear equations, rearranging simple formulae 

– Sequences (arithmetic only), straightline graphs, and basic quadratic graphs (plotting only).

-Spend time on word problems that mix these topics (e.g., sharing in a ratio, percentage increase/decrease, and simple interest), as these are common in exam questions.[6][2]

  1. b) Master Geometry and Measures

Key topics:

– Angles (parallel lines, polygons, circle properties only at a basic level) 

– Area and perimeter of standard shapes, volume of prisms 

– Pythagoras’ theorem (rightangled triangles) and basic trigonometry (sin, cos, tan on rightangled triangles) 

– Transformations: reflection, rotation, translation, and enlargement (scale factor)

 

  1. c) Build Confidence with Statistics

Foundation students should be able to:

– Interpret and draw bar charts, pie charts, pictograms, and line graphs 

– Calculate mean, median, mode, and range from data sets 

– Understand simple probability and use a probability scale (between 0 and 1)

Always check the scales and labels on graphs and present answers with correct units and rounding.

 

  1. d) Avoid Common Foundation Mistakes

– Misreading questions (e.g., “round to 1 decimal place” instead of “nearest whole number”) 

– Calculation errors (check BIDMAS and use your calculator carefully) 

– Forgetting units (cm, °, %, etc.) 

– Not showing working—even if the final answer is wrong, method marks can save the question.

 

  1. Higher Tier: Aim for a Grade 7–9

Higher-tier students need depth, speed, and exam technique to tackle the more challenging questions.

 

  1. a) Master Higher Algebra:

The higher tier goes much deeper in algebra:

– Algebraic fractions (simplify, add, subtract, solve equations) 

– Quadratics: factorizing, completing the square, solving by formula, and interpreting graphs 

– Simultaneous equations (linear and linear + quadratic) 

– Inequalities (linear and quadratic) and region identification on graphs 

– Functions, composite functions, and inverse functions.

 – Practice rearranging complex formulae and solving reallife problems involving algebra (e.g., compound interest, kinematics, geometry).

 

  1. b) Expand Geometry and Trigonometry Knowledge

The higher tier includes:

– Circle theorems (and their proofs) 

– Sine and cosine rules, area of a triangle using trigonometry

– 3D trigonometry and Pythagoras 

– Vectors (magnitude, direction, vector proofs, and geometric applications).

Practice these topics well with multistep problems and pastpaper questions; they often appear in the later, highmark questions.

 

  1. c) Prepare for Advanced Graphs and Functions

Higher tier covers:

– Quadratic, cubic, and reciprocal graphs 

– Graphical solutions (e.g., finding roots, intersections) 

– Transformations of graphs (y = f(x) to y = f(x±a), y = af(x), etc.) 

– Exponential functions and growth/decay problems.

-Practice sketching graphs and interpreting turning points and intercepts.

  

  1. d) Statistics and Probability at Higher Level

Higher students must:

– Interpret and draw histograms (including frequency density) 

– Use cumulative frequency graphs to find median, quartiles, and IQR 

– Box plots and comparing data sets 

– Conditional probability, tree diagrams, and Venn diagrams (including set notation)

Give full explanations in statistics questions (e.g., “the median is higher in Group A, so on average they scored more”) to pick up method and communication marks.

 

  1. Exam Preparation & Technique (Both Tiers)
  2. a) Use Real Past Papers:

– Download official Pearson Edexcel past papers and mark schemes for 4MA1 (IGCSE Math A).

– Do full papers under timed conditions, simulating real exam pressure. 

– Compare your answers to the mark scheme to see where you lose marks (e.g., missing steps, wrong units, or incomplete answers).

  1. b) Build a Strong Revision Plan:

– Split revision by topic (e.g., one week on numbers, one week on algebra, etc.) and include a mix of notes, examples, and practice questions.

– Use a revision checklist based on the Edexcel specification to ensure you cover everything.

– For higher tiers, focus extra time on the “big-mark” topics: algebra, trigonometry, graphs, and vectors.

  – Practice using the table function and graphing mode (if you have a GDC) to solve         equations and check graphs.

  1. d) Exam Day Strategy

 – Read each question carefully and underline key information (e.g., “give your answer to 3 significant figures”). 

– Show all steps clearly; even if the final answer is wrong, you can gain method marks.

– Allocate time wisely: spend about 1.5 minutes per mark (e.g., a 4mark question ≈ 6 minutes). 

– If stuck, leave space and move on; come back later if time allows.

 

  1. Final Tips for Success

– Set small, achievable goals each week (e.g., “master solving quadratic equations” or “complete 3 past papers on geometry”).

– Regularly review mistakes in a “mistake journal” to avoid repeating them.

– Ask teachers for help on tricky topics and clarify what the examiners expect in mark schemes.
