What Makes Our IB Mathematics Tutors Different From Other HK Tutors:
What to Expect in IB Math AA and AI Courses (SL & HL)
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Math programme is offered in two courses: Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretations (AI). Each course has a different focus and covers specific areas of study.
Analysis and Approaches (AA): This course emphasises the development of mathematical understanding through the exploration of key concepts, theorems, and techniques. Students will delve into abstract concepts such as algebra, calculus, and functions, and develop the skills to reason, model, and solve complex problems using mathematical methods. This course is designed for students interested in pursuing math- or science-related fields at university.
Applications and Interpretations (AI): This course focuses on the application of mathematical concepts to solve real-world problems in contexts such as economics, social sciences, and natural sciences. Students will develop the skills to interpret and use mathematical models, apply statistical analysis, and use technology to solve problems. This course is designed for students who want to apply mathematics in fields such as business, economics, or social sciences.
Assessment in IB Math courses includes coursework elements, written exams, and internal assessments. The written exams typically consist of a variety of tasks, including problem-solving, data analysis, and mathematical reasoning. The internal assessments involve the completion of individual projects or group work, where students are required to apply mathematical concepts and methods to solve real-world problems. Sessions include IB Math IA topic selection help (Internal Assessment), detailed IB Mathematics exploration structure feedback, and dedicated IB Math Paper 3 tutoring HK (Critical for Higher Level students) for HL candidates.
At All Round Education Academy, our IB Math tutor team is experienced and qualified in teaching both AA and AI courses. They provide personalised attention and a learner-centred approach to teaching, focusing not only on exam skills and techniques but also on building a solid knowledge base. With a curriculum that emphasises critical thinking, creativity, and intercultural understanding, the IBDP is one of the most comprehensive programs in the world. Students will choose six subjects to study over the course of two years, including a second language, a humanities course, an experimental science, mathematics, and an arts course. The IBDP also requires students to complete an extended essay, a theory of knowledge course, and community service. As an internationally recognised qualification, the IBDP provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their future academic and professional endeavours.

Frequently Asked Questions About IB Mathematics Tutors in Hong Kong
What’s the difference between IB Maths AA and AI?
AA (Analysis & Approaches) and AI (Applications & Interpretation) are two completely separate IB Mathematics courses introduced in 2019 with different difficulty levels. AA is the pure, theoretical, calculus-heavy course designed for students targeting mathematics, engineering, physics and computer science. Its defining features are: no GDC on Paper 1, proof by induction (HL), complex numbers (HL), and a calculus spine that runs through the entire course. AI is the applied, statistics-focused, technology-integrated course designed for students targeting social sciences, business and psychology. Its defining features are: GDC permitted on all papers, deep hypothesis testing and statistical modelling (HL), Voronoi diagrams, graph theory and matrix models. The choice between AA and AI should be made by identifying the specific mathematics requirement of every university programme the student is seriously considering — not by preference or perceived difficulty.
Which IB Maths course does Cambridge or Oxford require?
For Mathematics, Engineering, Physics and Computer Science at Oxford and Cambridge, IB Mathematics Analysis & Approaches (AA) at Higher Level is required — and a grade of 7 is expected or strongly preferred. Our tutors here understand that IB Maths AI HL is not accepted for these programmes, and AA SL is insufficient. This is a non-negotiable requirement that has been consistent since the 2019 curriculum split. For Economics at Oxford (PPE) and Cambridge (Economics), AA HL is strongly preferred, and AI HL is generally not accepted, though this should be verified annually with admissions departments. For all other Oxford and Cambridge programmes — humanities, social sciences, biological sciences — no specific IB Maths HL requirement typically applies beyond Group 5 completion.
Do HK universities accept IB Maths AI?
Yes — HKU, HKUST and CUHK all accept both IB Maths AA and AI for general admission. However, for quantitative-heavy programmes, both AA and AI are not treated equally. Engineering programmes at HKU and HKUST strongly prefer or require AA HL. Quantitative Finance and Actuarial Science at HKU similarly prefer AA. Business Analytics at HKUST prefers AA. For Law, Social Sciences, Architecture and the Humanities at all three universities, AI HL or AA SL is typically sufficient. As always, verify current published requirements directly with each faculty before finalising subject choices — requirements change annually.
When should I seek out an IB Maths tutor?
The ideal starting point is before the IB begins — during the summer between Year 11 and Year 12, for a placement consultation (AA vs AI, and HL vs SL) and for bridging content from IGCSE. Students who enter IB1 having confirmed the right course and having covered the IGCSE-to-IB content gaps (for AA: algebraic manipulation, function composition, introduction to calculus; for AI: statistical distributions, basic probability modelling) start significantly ahead of their unbridged cohort. For students already in IB1 or IB2, earlier in the school year is better than later — our maths tutors here at All Round Education Academy can structure effective catch-up programmes at any stage, but the time available to develop fluency in mathematics (rather than just exam technique) is shorter the later tutoring begins.
