The transition from MYP 5 to IBDP Year 1 (IB1) is one of the most significant academic step-ups a student makes. Many students — and their families — underestimate it. The MYP is broad and inquiry-led; the IBDP is specialised, content-heavy and externally examined. Students who enter IB1 without adequate preparation for this shift often struggle in the first semester. Our teaching methodology and highly qualified and experienced tutors make us the fastest-growing MYP tutoring centre in HK.

Frequently Asked Questions About MYP Tutors in Hong Kong
What is the IB MYP, and who is it for?
The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a five-year educational framework for students aged 11 to 16 (Grades 6–10 or Years 7-11 i.e. MYP 1–5). It is designed as the middle stage of the IB continuum — following the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and leading into the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) or other post-16 qualifications. The MYP is offered at IB-authorised schools and is built around conceptual learning, inquiry, and the development of transferable Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills. In Hong Kong, the MYP is offered at more than a dozen international schools, including CDNIS, VSA and RCHK.
What is the difference between MYP and IBDP?
The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) covers Grades 6–10 or Years 7-11 (ages 11–16) and is a broad, inquiry-based programme with eight subject groups and criteria-based assessment. There are no mandatory external examinations in MYP 1–4; MYP 5 has an optional eAssessment. The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) covers Grades 11–12 or Years 12-13 (ages 16–18/19) and is a specialised, externally examined qualification: students take six subjects (three at Higher Level, three at Standard Level) plus the Core (TOK, EE, CAS) and are graded on a 45-point scale. The IBDP is significantly more intensive and more exam-focused than the MYP — the transition requires specific preparation.
How is MYP assessed?
MYP assessment is criteria-based. Each subject has four defined criteria (labelled A, B, C and D), each scored on a scale of 0–8. The four criterion scores are combined using a set of grade boundary tables to produce a final subject grade of 1–7, where 7 is the highest. For MYP 1–4 students, all assessments are school-based — there are no external examinations. MYP 5 (Grade 10 or Year 11) students have the option to sit the IB eAssessment, a suite of externally set and marked on-screen examinations and coursework that leads to the MYP Certificate. Whether a school offers the eAssessment pathway varies — check with your school directly.
When should my child start MYP tutoring?
The right time depends on the nature of the support needed. For subject consolidation — strengthening understanding of a specific subject’s content and assessment criteria — MYP 1 or 2 is the ideal starting point, allowing time to build strong habits before the higher-stakes work of MYP 5. For Personal Project support, MYP 5 is the relevant year — ideally starting when the topic is first being scoped (typically Term 1 of Grade 10/Year 11) rather than waiting until the report-writing phase. For IBDP transition preparation, the summer between MYP 5 and IB1 is the prime window — All Round Education programmes are designed specifically for this transition point. Students who are already in MYP 5 and need urgent support for a specific task or assessment can also benefit from targeted short-term tutoring.
