Exploring the Common Pain Points of IB Biology

IB Biology is renowned for its difficulty within the curriculum. Students face extensive subject matter, from cell structure to ecology. Consequently, many resort to memorisation or last-minute tutoring, missing a deep understanding.

While this provides short-term relief, it often leads to knowledge loss over two years, creating stress in the final-year exams. High-Level (HL) students confront additional complexity.

Lacking expert guidance, students may struggle. Understanding critical experiments and intricate knowledge is vital. This is where our IB Biology tutor team in HK can help students develop clarity and long-term mastery.

What Is the IB Biology Programme?

The IB Biology programme is divided into four main topics: Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Ecology.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Biology programme is a rigorous and challenging course that covers a wide range of topics in the field of biology. The course is designed to help students develop a deep understanding of the subject, as well as the skills needed to analyse and interpret complex biological phenomena.

Cell Biology: The Cell Biology topic covers the structure and function of cells, including cell division, membranes, and organelles. Students will learn about the role of enzymes in metabolic pathways, the mechanisms of cellular respiration and photosynthesis, and the ways in which cells communicate with each other.

Molecular Biology: The Molecular Biology topic covers the structure and function of DNA and RNA, protein synthesis, and the regulation of gene expression. Students will learn about the molecular basis of genetics, genetic modification, and the use of DNA technology in biotechnology.

Genetics: The Genetics topic covers the principles of inheritance, genetic variation, and genetic disorders. Students will learn about Mendelian genetics, population genetics, and the role of genetics in evolution.

Ecology: The Ecology topic covers the study of ecosystems and the interactions between living organisms and their environment. Students will learn about the flow of energy and matter through ecosystems, the relationships between species, and the impact of human activity on the environment.

What Are the IB Biology Assessment Methods?

Assessment in IB Biology includes both external and internal assessment components. The external assessment comprises written exams, which test students’ understanding of core concepts and their ability to apply them to real-world scenarios. The internal assessment includes practical work, where students design and carry out experiments and write up their findings.

Assessments in Biology at the Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL)

Biology SL Assessments:

Paper 1: Tests knowledge through multiple choice and data-based questions and carries a weighting of 36% of the final grade. Students drill from our IB Biology Paper 1 multiple choice database covering every syllabus topic with full explanations.

Paper 2: This paper includes short-answer, and extended-response questions on core material. It is a 90-minute exam with a 44% weight in the final grade, totalling 50 marks. Our coaching delivers proven IB Bio Paper 2 extended-response structures that maximise marks across data-based and essay-style questions.

Internal Assessment: In this segment, students engage in an individual investigation, dedicating 10 hours to its completion. This internal assessment holds a 20% weight in the final grade. Our IB Biology IA topic vetting and methodology help guide students from research questions through to write-up.

Biology HL Assessments:

Paper 1: Tests knowledge through multiple choice and data-based questions and carries a weighting of 36% of the final grade.

Paper 2: This paper includes short-answer, and extended-response questions on core material. It is a 150-minute exam with a 44% weight in the final grade.

Internal Assessment: In this segment, students engage in an individual investigation, dedicating 10 hours to its completion. This internal assessment holds a 20% weight in the final grade.

Frequently Asked Questions About IB Biology Tutors in Hong Kong

Should I consider hiring a tutor for IB Biology?

Yes — IB Biology HL is widely regarded as one of the most content-heavy subjects in the IBDP. HL requires 240 teaching hours across 40 subtopics (compared to 150 hours and 20 subtopics at SL), and the depth of molecular and biochemical detail in HL is substantially beyond what most students encounter in pre-IB biology. The global average for IB Biology HL is approximately 4.2/7 — at All Round our students averaged a 6+ in the recent 2025 exam a full 2 points over the global scores. The subjects that consistently differentiate strong from average HL Biology students are Nucleic Acids and Metabolism, which require molecular-level understanding of processes that are taught superficially at IGCSE or pre-IB level. With a tutor from All Round Academy, targeted gap-filling in these topics and systematic past paper practice, grade 6–7 is achievable for well-prepared students.

Which is better for medicine: IB Biology HL or Chemistry HL?

For the vast majority of UK and Hong Kong medical school programmes, Chemistry HL is the required or strongly preferred science subject — not Biology HL. Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial, King’s and most other UK medical schools specify Chemistry HL as a requirement; Biology HL is recommended but not always mandatory. HKU MBBS and CUHK Medicine similarly list Chemistry HL as a requirement alongside Biology. In practice, most medicine-pathway students at Hong Kong IB schools take both Biology HL and Chemistry HL — dropping one for SL is a strategic risk worth taking only after reviewing the specific requirements of every university the student is targeting. Our tutors and advisors recommend medicine-pathway students on a subject combination strategy as part of our initial consultation.

What happened to Paper 3 and the ‘Options’ in the new IB Biology syllabus?

Starting with the 2025/2026 exam cycle, the International Baccalaureate (IB) has integrated key material from the former “Options” directly into the Higher Level (HL) core curriculum. Rather than selecting a single elective topic, students are now required to master advanced concepts across several specialized themes. Paper 3 has been completely removed.

  • Neurobiology: Integrated into “Neural Signaling,” focusing on brain function and synaptic plasticity.
  • Biotechnology: Included within “Genetics” and “Metabolism,” covering techniques such as PCR and CRISPR gene editing.
  • Ecology: Expanded under “Ecosystems” to include complex climate modeling and global biodiversity conservation strategies.
  • Human Physiology: HL requirements now include more sophisticated details on osmoregulation (the kidney), muscle contraction, and advanced immunology.

Do universities prefer Biology HL or SL?

For biosciences, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, biomedical engineering and environmental science programmes at competitive universities, Biology HL is strongly preferred and in many cases required. UK medical schools, including Oxford, Cambridge and UCL specify or strongly recommend Biology HL. SL Biology is generally accepted for non-biology-specialist programmes in business, humanities or social sciences where a science subject is required in Group 4 but is not the subject of the intended degree. If your child is targeting a biology-adjacent university programme, always verify the specific HL/SL requirement with each university before finalising subject choices.

When should IB Biology tutoring start?

For conceptual consolidation and systematic topic coverage, the start of IB1 (Year 12) is ideal — before school assessments begin and while the foundational topics (Topics 1–3) are still being introduced. For IA support, consider seeking out a tutor when the school introduces the IA task — typically Term 2 or 3 of IB1 — with the most critical session being the research question scoping session before any experimental work begins. For exam preparation focused on past papers and mock exams, we recommend beginning IB Biology tutoring no later than six months before the May examination session. Students who join All Round Education in IB2 can still achieve significant improvements, particularly in Paper 3 option coaching and IA criterion-referenced feedback, but earlier is always better.
