What makes our IGCSE Biology tutors stand out in HK?
Understanding IGCSE Biology
The IGCSE Biology programme helps learners master the basic principles of biology through a mix of theoretical and practical studies.
Through a comprehensive assessment of your current abilities, our expert IGCSE Biology tutors help students build a solid understanding of the learning objectives within the syllabus and also help with past paper drills and technique building. Structured IGCSE Biology past papers practice sits at the core of every IGCSE Biology exam preparation programme we run.
The most important practical decision for IGCSE Biology students in Hong Kong is board alignment —In Hong Kong, both exams boards are equally dominant at international schools with ESF schools like KGV, Island and South Island preferring the Edexcel board while schools like Nord Anglia International and YCIS prefer the CIE examination board. If your child’s school has not specified the board, verify. Our specialist CIE IGCSE Biology tutoring (Cambridge) covers IGCSE CIE Biology (exam code:0610) in full, and our Edexcel IGCSE Biology tutor team delivers full IGCSE Edexcel Biology (exam code:4BI1) coverage.
The two syllabi cover broadly similar biological content but differ meaningfully in paper structure, assessment philosophy and the specific demands they place on students. A tutor trained in CIE 0610 mark-scheme logic is not automatically equipped to coach Edexcel 4BI1 students — AllRound Biology tutors are board-specific.
Cambridge CIE 0610 IGCSE Biology: syllabus overview
Cambridge CIE IGCSE Biology (0610) is structured around 21 syllabus sections organised into broad topic areas, assessed across multiple papers with a tiered structure that allows students to target different grade bands. The 21 sections are:
Section 1: Characteristics and classification of living organisms
Section 2: Organisation of the organism — cells, tissues, organs, organ systems
Section 3: Movement in and out of cells — diffusion, osmosis, active transport
Section 4: Biological molecules — carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, water, food tests
Section 5: Enzymes — structure, substrate specificity, factors affecting activity, industrial applications, with focused drills on enzyme activity and denaturing.
Section 6: Plant nutrition — photosynthesis, limiting factors, mineral requirements, leaf structure — including dedicated photosynthesis and plant nutrition drills.
Section 7: Human nutrition — nutrients, the alimentary canal, digestion and absorption, health
Section 8: Transport in plants — xylem and phloem, transpiration, translocation
Section 9: Transport in animals — the blood system, blood components, the heart, lymph
Section 10: Diseases and immunity — pathogens, transmission, defence mechanisms, vaccination, antibiotics
Section 11: Gas exchange in humans — lung structure, mechanism of breathing, gas exchange surface
Section 12: Respiration — aerobic and anaerobic respiration, the role of ATP
Section 13: Excretion in humans — kidney structure and function, urine formation, dialysis — covered alongside homeostasis and excretion as an integrated topic.
Section 14: Coordination and response — nervous system, reflex arc, sense organs, hormones, homeostasis
Section 15: Drugs — medical and recreational drugs, effects of alcohol and nicotine
Section 16: Reproduction — sexual and asexual reproduction, the human reproductive system, menstrual cycle, fertilisation, pregnancy, STIs
Section 17: Inheritance — chromosomes, genes, alleles, Mendelian genetics, sex determination, mutation — classes cover DNA, inheritance, and genetic modification, plus mitosis and meiosis alongside foundational cell division mechanics.
Section 18: Variation and natural selection — types of variation, natural selection, evolution
Section 19: Organisms and their environment — ecosystems, food webs, nutrient cycles, energy flow
Section 20: Human influences on ecosystems — pollution, deforestation, conservation
Section 21: Biotechnology and genetic engineering — selective breeding, GMOs, cloning, fermentation
The CIE 0610 syllabus uses a Core / Supplement structure. Core content (marked C in the syllabus) is assessed in all papers and targets grades C to G. Supplement content (marked S) extends Core content at greater depth and is only assessed in the Extended tier papers — enabling grades A* to E. The Supplement additions appear in most sections and typically involve more detailed mechanisms, additional processes, and quantitative analysis of biological data.
Edexcel IGCSE Biology (4BI1): syllabus overview
Edexcel IGCSE Biology (4BI1) covers similar biological content to CIE 0610 but with a simplified assessment structure and no Core/Extended split — all candidates sit the same papers. The content is organised into nine topic areas:
Topic 1: The nature and variety of living organisms
Topic 2: Structures and functions in living organisms — cells, nutrition, transport, respiration, coordination, homeostasis
Topic 3: Reproduction and inheritance
Topic 4: Ecology and the environment
Topic 5: Use of biological resources — biotechnology, selective breeding
Topic 6: (Higher Tier extension content integrated within topics 1–5)
Edexcel 4BI1 uses a two-paper structure: Paper 1 (Biology, 61.1% weighting, 2 hours) and Paper 2 (Biology, 38.9% weighting, 1 hour 15 minutes). No separate practical paper — the practical skills component is assessed within the theory papers through data-based questions and experimental interpretation questions. The grading scale is 9–1 (9 highest) rather than CIE’s A*–G.
Choosing between Core and Extended
If your child has any realistic prospect of achieving a grade B or above in Biology, they should be on the Extended tier. A grade E on Extended is a better outcome than a grade C on Core for most post-16 pathways — both IB schools and A-Level programmes understand that the Extended tier means exposure to the full syllabus, and they assess accordingly.
One scenario where the Core tier is genuinely appropriate is when a student has significant conceptual gaps across multiple sections that would make the Extended tier content inaccessible within the available preparation time, and where a grade C is an acceptable outcome for their post-16 plans. AllRound tutors can advise on tier placement after a diagnostic session.

International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Program
What is the IGCSE?
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is the most widely studied international secondary qualification in Hong Kong, typically taken by students in Years 10 and 11 (ages 14–16). Offered by Cambridge Assessment International Education (Cambridge CIE) and Pearson Edexcel, IGCSE is the standard pre-16 qualification at the vast majority of Hong Kong international schools.
IGCSE grades are recognised globally and form a critical foundation for the next stage of education — whether that is the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP), A-Levels or other post-16 pathways. Strong IGCSE results, particularly at A* and A in Extended tier subjects, open the door to HL subject choices at IB and to competitive UK university A-Level programmes.

Q: What is the difference between CIE and Edexcel IGCSE Biology?
A: Cambridge CIE IGCSE Biology (0610) and Edexcel IGCSE Biology (4BI1) cover similar biological content but differ in structure and assessment. CIE 0610 has a Core/Extended tier split — students choose either the Core route (maximum grade C) or the Extended route (grades A* to E) — and includes a separate practical assessment paper (Paper 5 or Paper 6 Alternative to Practical). For Edexcel 4BI1 all students sit the same two papers, and practical skills are assessed within the theory papers rather than in a separate practical paper. CIE 0610 uses an A*–G grading scale; Edexcel 4BI1 uses 9–1. In Hong Kong, both exams boards are equally dominant at international schools with ESF schools like KGV, Island and South Island preferring the Edexcel board while schools like Nord Anglia International and YCIS prefer the CIE examination board. The mark-scheme language and assessment philosophy differ enough between boards that board-specific tutoring is strongly preferable to generic IGCSE Biology tutoring.
Q: Should my child take Core or Extended IGCSE Biology?
A: For almost all students at Hong Kong international schools, the Extended tier is the correct choice. Core tier caps the maximum achievable grade at C — a grade that is often insufficient for entry to IB Biology HL or A-Level Biology at competitive schools, and that signals limited biological preparation to post-16 institutions. The extended tier covers the full CIE 0610 syllabus, including Supplement content, and allows grades A* through E. One scenario where the Core tier is genuinely appropriate is when a student has significant content gaps across multiple sections that make Extended tier preparation unrealistic within the time available, and a grade C is an acceptable outcome. Our IGCSE tutors can assess this after a diagnostic session.
Q: When do IGCSE Biology exams take place?
A: Cambridge CIE IGCSE Biology examinations run in two main sessions each year: the May/June session (the primary session for Year 11 students at Hong Kong international schools, with exams typically running from early May to mid-June) and the October/November session (available for resit candidates and students on accelerated timelines). Edexcel IGCSE Biology follows a similar pattern with June and November sessions. Registration deadlines are managed by the school — students should confirm their examination entry with their school well in advance of the session. Our tutors align programmes to each student’s confirmed examination window.
Q: Where can I find the best IGCSE Biology tutor in Hong Kong and when should I reach out?
A: You can find the best IGCSE Biology tutors in Hong Kong right here at All Round Education. For optimal results, our academic advisors recommend reaching out at least six months before the May/June exams, ideally during the first term of Year 10. Starting at this stage allows students to master challenging Extended tier content and build vital active recall habits before school assessments begin, though starting in Year 9 provides the ultimate foundation. For students already in Year 11, we offer a highly focused program that prioritizes high-weighted syllabus sections and Paper 6 exam techniques to maximize scores in a limited timeframe.
