Individualised Curriculum

One of the common weaknesses observed from our current students is their lack of comprehension of literary techniques, which hinders them from achieving the top marks. Depending on the students’ preference, they can choose from 1-on-1 private tutoring or small group classes (3-1, 5-1, or 7-1) to work with our tutors and tackle different issues.

In-Person & Online Course Tutors

In addition to in-person tutoring at our centres and offering home tutoring across HK, All Round Education Academy also offers private and group tutoring online, so you have the option to access our leading IGCSE English tutors from home.

  • Past papers to build experience for their eventual examinations.

  • Direct comparisons between top-scoring answers and lower-level answers to highlight what students should aspire to do as well as avoid.
  • Accessing examiner’s reports to specifically assess what actual examiners are directly looking for.
  • Learner-centred paradigm for students to construct knowledge through gathering and synthesising information and integrating it with the skills of inquiry, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Understanding the 4 IGCSE English syllabi

The four CIE IGCSE English syllabi are not variations of the same course — they exist for different student profiles, assess different competencies and lead to different post-16 pathways. The single most important question before any IGCSE English coaching begins is: which exact syllabus code is your child sitting? Alongside CIE, our Edexcel IGCSE English Language A/ Language B coaching covers both Edexcel pathways for HK schools using that board.

At most Hong Kong international schools, the syllabus is assigned by the school based on a language assessment in Year 9 or Year 10. Parents sometimes believe their child is sitting 0500 when they are sitting 0510 — or are unaware that their child has also been entered for 0475 as a separate subject. AllRound’s first action with every new IGCSE English student is to confirm the syllabus code from the school’s examination entry paperwork.

IGCSE First Language English (0500 / 0990)

Cambridge CIE First Language English (0500, or 0990 for the 9-1 graded variant) is designed for students whose strongest language of literacy is English — native or near-native speakers who read, write and think analytically in English. It is the standard English qualification at most ESF schools and at Hong Kong international schools with English as the primary medium of instruction. Our CIE IGCSE English First Language (0500) programme combines text analysis and explicit/implicit meaning training with examiner-aligned writing drills.

0500 is not a test of English acquisition — it is a test of sophisticated English literacy: comprehending complex texts quickly, extracting implicit meaning, writing in a range of registers and purposes, and constructing extended pieces that are both accurate and stylistically accomplished. Assessment structure:

  • Paper 1 — Reading: Q1 tests directed reading — locating and selecting specific information from a specified passage section. Q2 tests summary writing — producing a concise summary within a stated word limit using one’s own words. Q3 tests language and effect analysis — identifying specific language choices and explaining their effect on the reader. Targeted summary writing and synthesis skills drills cover word-limit discipline and own-words paraphrase.
  • Paper 2 — Directed Writing and Composition: Section 1 (Directed Writing) — produce a piece of writing for a specific form, audience and purpose (article, speech, letter, report, interview) using information from the stimulus. Section 2 (Composition) — choose from narrative or descriptive tasks and produce extended original writing. We deliver dedicated directed writing and argumentative essays coaching alongside creative writing and descriptive essays practice for Section 2.
  • Coursework pathway (Papers 3 and 4): available at some schools as an alternative to the examination papers. If your child’s school offers coursework, confirm which route they are entered for — preparation differs significantly.

The 9-1 variant (0990) covers identical content to 0500 with a different grading scale. Our tutors prepare students for both examination content and mark-scheme expectations, which are the same.

IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510 / 0511)

Cambridge CIE IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510, or 0511 for the count-in-speaking variant) is designed for students learning English as an additional language — students whose home language is Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, German, French or another non-English language. In Hong Kong’s international school context, 0510 students are typically those who have developed strong communicative English through schooling but for whom English is not a primary literacy language. Our IGCSE English Second Language (0510 / 0511) programme covers both variants with HK-specific language scaffolding.

0510 tests receptive and productive English skills across reading, writing, listening and speaking. Unlike 0500, which rewards advanced analytical literacy, 0510 rewards communicative competence: extracting information from texts accurately, producing functional writing for real-world purposes, and demonstrating oral fluency. Assessment structure:

  • Paper 1 — Reading and Writing: reading tasks based on informational texts (reports, articles, advertisements), including short-answer comprehension, form-filling, note-taking, information transfer and summary writing. The writing component requires producing a letter, email or report based on the reading texts. Extended candidates sit a more demanding version and access grades A* to E; Core candidates access grades C to G.
  • Paper 2 — Listening: based on authentic English speech recordings — conversations, announcements, interviews. Tasks include short-answer questions, note-taking, gap-filling and multiple choice. Passages were played twice for most questions.
  • Paper 3 — Speaking: prepared topic talk followed by a conversation with the examiner. Assessed on communication, vocabulary range, accuracy and fluency.

Our IGCSE tutors recommend the Extended tier for all 0510 students who have any realistic prospect of achieving grade B or above, and for all students planning to transition to IB English B or Language A.

IGCSE Literature in English (0475)

Cambridge CIE IGCSE Literature in English (0475) is a separate subject from 0500 and 0510 — it is a literary studies qualification, not a language skills qualification. Students study prescribed literary texts (prose, poetry and drama from the CIE set text list) and are assessed on their ability to analyse those texts as literary works: interpreting meaning, identifying authorial technique and constructing evidence-based analytical arguments about how writers achieve their effects. Our CIE IGCSE English Literature (0475) coaching drills analyzing themes, characters, and literary devices across set texts, with structured unseen poetry and prose preparation sessions throughout the year.

0475 is typically taken alongside 0500 by students who are strong in English and literature — it is not a replacement for 0500. Assessment structure:

  • Paper 1 — Poetry and Prose: two questions — one on a set poetry text, one on a set prose text. For each, students choose between a passage-based question (analysing a given extract closely) or an essay question (a sustained analytical response on a theme or character across the whole text).
  • Paper 2 — Drama: two questions on set drama texts, same format as Paper 1. Students must also demonstrate understanding of the texts as performance — stage directions, dramatic irony, theatrical conventions — not only as written literature.
  • Coursework option (Component 3): a portfolio of written responses to class texts, available at some schools as an alternative to the examination papers.

The core skill in 0475 is close textual analysis — moving from a specific quotation to an interpretation of its effect in a structured analytical paragraph. Students who narrate what happens rather than analysing how language works consistently underperform.

IGCSE World Literature (0408)

Cambridge CIE IGCSE World Literature (0408) is a newer syllabus for students who study literary texts from diverse global traditions — Asian, African, Latin American, Middle Eastern and other literary contexts, in English translation or originally written in English outside the British tradition. It is commonly offered at Hong Kong international schools.. Our CIE IGCSE English World Literature (0408) sessions teach comparing texts and essay structure frameworks across diverse global literary traditions.

Assessment follows the same analytical essay format as 0475 — passage-based and discursive essay questions on set texts — with the added dimension of cross-cultural analysis: students are expected to demonstrate awareness of the cultural contexts from which their texts emerge. Two exam papers (Paper 2 — Unseen Poetry; Paper 3 — Prose & Drama), with a coursework option at some schools.

The IGCSE English programme develops learners’ ability to communicate effectively through the use of reading, writing and literary techniques, as well as through a wide range of vocabulary and grammar.

Through a comprehensive assessment of your current abilities, our expert IGCSE English tutors help students build a solid understanding of the learning objectives within the syllabus and also help with past paper drills and technique building. Structured IGCSE English past paper analysis walks students through mark schemes, examiner feedback and high-band exemplars.

International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Program

What is the IGCSE?

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is the most widely studied international secondary qualification in Hong Kong, typically taken by students in Years 10 and 11 (ages 14–16). Offered by Cambridge Assessment International Education (Cambridge CIE) and Pearson Edexcel, IGCSE is the standard pre-16 qualification at the vast majority of Hong Kong international schools.
IGCSE grades are recognised globally and form a critical foundation for the next stage of education — whether that is the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP), A-Levels or other post-16 pathways. Strong IGCSE results, particularly at A* and A in Extended tier subjects, open the door to HL subject choices at IB and to competitive UK university A-Level programmes.

7. What is the difference between IGCSE 0500 and 0510?

CIE IGCSE First Language English (0500) and English as a Second Language (0510) are two distinct qualifications for different student profiles. 0500 is for students whose primary language of literacy is English — native or near-native speakers — and tests advanced reading comprehension, summary writing, language analysis and original composition. 0510 is for students learning English as an additional language and tests communicative proficiency: reading, writing, listening and speaking across functional real-world contexts. The papers, mark-scheme expectations and preparation strategies differ significantly. Students who are native English speakers entered for 0510 will find it less demanding than their ability warrants; EAL students entered for 0500 will find it overwhelming. Confirming the exact syllabus code with the school before any preparation begins is the single most important first step.

8. Should my child take IGCSE First Language English or ESL?

In most Hong Kong international schools, the school makes the placement based on a language assessment — the choice is not typically the family’s to make independently. Schools place native or near-native English speakers in 0500 and additional-language learners in 0510. If a family believes the placement is incorrect — for example, if a student has been placed in 0510 but has near-native English fluency — reach out to our IGCSE English tutors for an independent level assessment before approaching the school. The stakes are significant: 0500 is a standard prerequisite for IB English A; 0510 feeds naturally into IB English B. A misplaced student has the wrong post-16 pathway mapped out from Year 10.

9. Does IGCSE English 0500 prepare for IB English A?

Yes — 0500 is the standard IGCSE foundation for IB English A Literature and Language & Literature. The reading comprehension, summary and composition fluency that 0500 develops are directly relevant to IB English A paper demands. The main additions required for IB English A are: thesis-driven literary analytical essay structure; literary metalanguage used with precision (narrative perspective, dramatic irony, imagery as analytical vocabulary); and comparative essay writing across two texts simultaneously (IB Paper 2). Our IGCSE-to-IB English bridging programme, designed by our tutors and advisors, addresses all three. Students also doing 0475 Literature transition to IB English A Literature particularly smoothly — the close reading and analytical habits are already established.

10. When should I seek out a tutor for IGCSE English?

For 0500 First Language English, our IGCSE tutors recommend beginning structured coaching in Year 10 — ideally in the first term, when Paper 1 question type conventions and Paper 2 directed writing forms can be introduced before school assessments begin. Reading and writing skills develop slowly through sustained practice and cannot be effectively crammed before the examination. For 0510 ESL, the listening and speaking components in particular benefit from sustained practice across both Year 10 and Year 11 — a late start limits the productive skills improvement achievable. For 0475 Literature, coaching is most effective once the set texts are assigned by the school (typically early Year 10), so close reading can be developed using the actual texts being assessed. Students who join All Round Education Academy in Year 11 are supported with a focused programme targeting the highest-leverage paper technique, but the development of genuine reading and writing ability is more constrained the later coaching begins.

11. What is the difference between IGCSE English Literature (0475) and World Literature (0408)?

Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English (0475) focuses exclusively on texts originally written in English, whereas World Literature (0408) explicitly explores global cultures through translated masterworks. Their grading mechanics differ completely; while 0475 is typically taken as a 100% exam-based track in Hong Kong, 0408 features a mandatory 38.5% coursework portfolio. This World Literature portfolio requires students to produce both a critical essay and a creative, character-driven empathic response essay. The remaining 61.5% of the World Literature grade is then evaluated across two written exams covering unseen and set texts. This heavy coursework element makes 0408 incredibly rewarding for versatile writers but exceptionally demanding in terms of drafting precision and time management. Because local international schools vary widely in their syllabus choices, our tutors align their coaching directly with each school’s specific text selections and portfolio deadlines.
